The word new is usually defined as "having been made or come into being only a short time ago; recent".

Etymologically, the word new comes from Old English nīwe or nēowe, From Proto-Germanic *newjaz, ultimately from PIE *newo or *néwos.

Other Indo-European cognates include Greek νέος neos, Latin novus, Welsh newydd, Persianنو nō, Sanskrit नवnava and other similar words.

The Sanskrit word नवis also homonymous with the word for nine. Sometimes it is transliterated as 那婆 ( * na ba in Archaic Chinese) in Chinese Buddhist texts.
