Word of the day - Icon

An icon is an image, a picture or a representation. In Eastern Orthodox Church, an icon is a flat panel painting depicting holy beings, especially those of Christ, Mary, saints and angels, or biblical scenes.

Orthodox Church traditions teache that the first iconographer is Saint Luke the Evangelist who painted the Virgin Mary on a panel.

In semiotic sense, an icon a sign which resembles the object which it signifies.

The word icon is derived from Greek εἰκών, eikōn "likeness, image, portrait", ultimately from PIE *weik, "to be like".
