Word of the day - نوروز
نوروز (nowrūz) or its various spelling variants is the Vernal Equinox festival of various Indo-Iranian and Turkic language speakers. As the new year holiday, it is a major celebration in Iran today.
Literally, نوروز means "new day", نو now "new" and روز rūz "day". Etymologically speaking, the word now comes from Middle Persian nok, Avestan nava, from PIE *newo- , the English word "new" is derived from the same source; where as the word rūz comes from Middle Persian roc, Avestan raocah, from PIE *leuk, sharing the same root with the English word "light".
Nowrūz is also an important religious festival in Zoroastrianism, Bahá'í Faith and certain orders of Sufism. Some evidences suggested that the Manicheans (at least its Central Asian adherents) might observed the holiday as well.
