Word of the day - Alamak

Alamak is an exclamation frequently used in Singapore and Malaysia to indicate surprise, shock, annoyance, frustration, similar with "oh no", "darn", "oh dear" in English.

This word is literary translated as "mother of god", i.e. the Virgin Mary, from اله ala, "to deify" or الله Allāh "Allah, God" + mak, the Malay word for mother, possibly the word itself is from Kristang (a Portuguese creole language spoken in Malaysia and Singapore) alamah with the same meaning.
